These are some simple points to be known about piracying.

• MUSIC: Musicians make their money through their concerts and shows. Before the internet era, they only could spread their music having spectators, public.

It means casettes, vinils and CDs are made to spread the musician’s music. They don’t make money selling albums (that money goes basically to intermediaries), but they do gain fame and name. So if you really like an artist buy his/her albums, so they will know in your country there are fans enough to tour or to have some shows. And above all: go to their shows if you can! (plus, the auditory experience is utterly different and awesome).

If you’re just ‘trying’ music, just discovering new songs and artists, or you want some music because you just like to listen at it from time to time, buying complete albums is a waste of money (a money the artist won’t earn). But if you really love some particular songs, you can buy them via iTunes, Beatport, etc. Again, it shows suport to the artist you really like.

• MOVIES: Every movie that has been in the cinema makes its money there, with its takings.

DVDs and Blurays are meant to, again, spread the movie to the people. And again, profits go to the intermediaries. If you really want to watch a movie, go to the cinema, support the artists. And if you really, really loved a movie and you would like to have it physically with you, just buy the DVD. Furthermore, some Special Editions are pretty gorgeous (and much others are pretty shitty).

• VIDEOGAMES: Videogame makers ONLY get their profits if they sell their games. Piracying them means some pretty bad consequences: the companies are going to have less future budgets for future games, the companies are going to think about if translating a game to other languages really worths it, prices are going to be more expensive.

If you think videogames are expensive think about this: an average PS3 game costs about 59€. Fifteen years ago they costed exactly the same, and obviously our standard of living and wages were quite different.

Some very popular games have merchandising, but it’s of course not enough to support the company.

• COMICS: Comic artists and cartoonists ONLY get their money when they sell their albums. Piracying a comic is diminishing even more their already hard to handle profession.

It’s not bad downloading a comic that is not able to buy in your country, but try to support the artist and let know the publishing company you like that comic by writing them a mail, with a review on your blog, a brief essay on your tumblr, etc.

• As you see, not all the piracy is the same. When you really like a work, support the artist. Don’t be fooled though: sharing music/movies via internet is the BEST WAY to make them known to other people, and it also means more people will want to see their shows, concerts, movies, comics, whatever, with a higher chance of buying their stuff.

Come on, you can do it! :D I’ve had an art block that lasted years just because my obsessive-compulsiveness but finally I can say I’m overcoming it. Working controling my time, with a chronometer, has really helped me, in case is useful for you.

Actually you’re pretty right, when I had a strict schedule I managed to do lot of things, and I’m always thinking ‘I just should make a new program again’, and I do nothing =_= Obviously I do need to work on it.
